Tom’s Government: Taxation and more

Next I am brought onto the next major topic of the government. Taxes. Don’t the general public just love taxes? If I was to run the government, I would make the following changes to the ways takes work:

  • Certain taxes would be removed or merged with other similar taxes,
  • VAT would be decreased (suicide at the moment, but keep reading) from 17.5% to 12%,
  • Taxes on alcohol and cigarettes would be increased substantially,
  • Various other taxes would be reviewed and hopefully the taxation system will be made more simple for families,
  • Finally, industry and large company tax may be reviewed and increased or decreased (depending on profits maybe?).

My changes on the tax side of things aren’t really that major, but are to make the system more simple. If I were to merge some of the similar taxes and even remove some, this would originally make the system more easier to understand. Next, decreasing VAT considerably may be suicide in terms of running a government but then hopefully the addition of (a considerable amount of) tax onto alcohol and cigarettes should cover this loss.

Next, we are back onto discussing crime. Drugs are an important topic to be discussing and are a major threat to everyone. I would bring in the following changes to deal with drugs:

  • The supplying of illegal substances will result in life imprisonment and all assets seized,
  • The dealing of illegal substances (street) will result in imprisonment of upto 12 years,
  • The possession of illegal substances will result in imprisonment of up to 2 years,
  • Finally, the drug ‘cannabis’ would be reviewed by health professionals for its short and long terms effects, then, a decision would be made whether to legalize the personal use of cannabis or not.*

As you can see, practically a zero-tolerance policy on drugs would be brought in to try and tackle the problem of drugs.

[* There is currently no sufficient proof that cannabis has any health issues, therefore I am giving it a fair trial]
